Blog 8-  From Life and death in Shanghai / Nien Cheng.

In Nein Cheng's story, Life and death in Shanghai, she shares her eventful life story where she overcomes being accused of being a spy for foreign countries and being held for almost seven years.  She overcame so much mistreatment and abuse during these times. Many quotations from the book were alarming about the pain she went through. One, in particular, was, "I was passed around from one guard to another like a ball in a game. Trying to maintain my balance, I became dizzy and breathless. Before I could gather my wrists together, A young male guard suddenly grabbed the lapels of my padded jacket.. then he bit his lower lip to show his determination and gave me a hard push..." She then slammed into the wall and collapsed onto the floor. The guard continued to slam her against the wall, while she was being screamed at by other guards. The imagery this describes is extremely gruesome and disturbing. But more importantly, it is so sad to see the life and mistreatment she experienced as an innocent woman. It is important how she stood in her beliefs and knew her truth through all of those years.

An example of her staying strong was when she was also asked by another female guard, "are you going to confess or do you want more punishment?" After being asked this she stayed silent. This shows true to her character the fact that she doesn't give in, even though she knows it will result in more violence, abuse, and mistreatment. Nein Cheng is an important female figure to learn from because of her intense perseverance and self-loyalty.

  1. I think the quote you included is disgusting, her being passed around through the guards feeling nauseous and then being slammed to the floor/walls. This treatment is ridiculous and her bravery to stand up to them and stand by her innocence is remarkable, I have no idea how I would've survived that. Self-loyalty and self-advocacy is a trait women need to have in a world that can sometimes be against us. Cheng is an amazing example of this.

  2. I agree with what you said about her strength. She went through daily torments and was told multiple times to confess to things that she didn't do. However, she remained vigilant and strong throughout the torture.
